Pool Covers - 5 Great Reasons To Use One

Five compelling reasons to cover your swimming pool.

No matter if you have an inground pool or an above ground pool there are some accessories that every pool owner should have, and a pool cover is one of these items. If you already have a pool but don’t have a cover, read on as we give you 5 excellent reasons to use one on your swimming pool. Below are a few of my favorite reasons that will save you time, money and hours of work.

Evaporation

Evaporating water from your pool means you will need to add more water pool on a regular basis. Having too low of a water level can cause the filter system to operate less efficiently. Water evaporation not only can also cause your water bill to go up as additional water is needed, but the now diluted pool water will also require more chemicals to get the water chemistry balanced again.

Chemical Consumption

Many people are unaware of the fact that they can cut down on chemical use by using a pool cover. Did you know the use of a cover could reduce chemical consumption by as much as 60 percent? The sun is responsible for stealing or neutralizing the chemicals you spend hard earned dollars to put in there. Limiting the pool's exposure to the sun can save you big. When you use fewer chemicals there is less concern with adverse reactions such as irritated skin, bleached hair or clothes. Best of all you can spend less money on monthly chemical maintenance.

Clean Up

If you don’t use a pool cover, it is easy for debris to make its way into the pool water. Insects, leaves among other types of debris have a far lesser chance of landing in the pool with the cover on. Ultimately this means less pool cleaning or maintenance.

Damage Control

When you don’t use a pool cover, you are increasing the risk of something happening to the pool's liner. Some of the worst liner damage occurs by the sun's UV rays. Over time the effects become apparent. Fading of the colorful print as well as brittleness of the vinyl material will occur causing premature liner failure. Other damage from critters falling limbs etc. can all be prevented by the use of a winter pool cover.

Pool Safety

While not the case with above ground pools, safety covers for in-ground pools are sturdy enough to hold up to 400 pounds per square foot. With one of these in place, if somebody does fall in the area they are going to get caught by the cover as opposed to finding their way into the water. This is a huge benefit if you have small children who will be in close proximity to the swimming pool. Safety covers are quite a bit more expensive, but last much longer and do a great job. Most inground swimming pool owner go this route. These are only five of the better reasons to use a pool cover. Can you think of any others? If you have a pool make sure you have a cover that you can use when the pool is not in frequent use. It certainly has many great advantages and the cost of a swimming pool cover is typically very budget friendly.
